There is so much to think about when it comes to planning your island getaway (forever). Good thing you get to choose your trusted timepiece (at least in this article you do). The biggest unknown is what time will bring as you lounge or suffer your days away. Your watch could break, or stop working, or worse yet, start and stop working without you noticing, so you just get confused. Your watch can be your best friend, and you’ll use it often given all your daily chores. Getting creative with using your watch is the key, and hopefully you can figure out how to use the slide-rule bezel. Don’t forget to read the manual before you get shipwrecked. So what would you do? What watch sounds best to bring, what other options would you add to the list? Comment now and let the world know.
Marcello C watches were my first love in Swiss watches. I learned about them from a WatchTime Annual watch list talking about watches being sold that year. This was maybe in 2003. I was lucky enough to find a Marcello C Nettuno 3 on eBay for a very reasonable price. The Marcello C Tridente is a larger version of that watch with a deeper water resistance of 1000m. The fit and finish of this watch are impeccable, tantamount to that of a Rolex. It uses a ETA 2824-2 movement which is as reliable a a chronometer, but just has not been formally certified.
Limes Watch Company hails from popular watch manufacturing Pforzheim Germany. Recently, I discussed Botta Design watches that also have their manufacturing plant in Pforzheim. Limes operates in the typical Teutonic watch making fashion of making high quality watches at relatively low prices. For the design, movement, fit, finish, price, and overall experience, a Swiss watch will never beat the sheer efficiency and consistency of German offerings. Germans really put the industrialization into watch making with a craftsman twist, while Swiss watches are still made with varying degrees of elitism and maintenance of traditional ideals.
The YES watches aren't as complex as their rich feature list would have you believe. The computer inside makes things simpler than you'd think, and the information displayed right on the face is what you need to know the most. For a full list of YES watch features, visit the YES Watch homepage here. What I will talk about are those features I find most interesting and useful. Although you can get buried in the functions, setting them is simple enough, and with a slight learning curve, you can easily figure out how to almost anything you'd like to with the yes watch easily.Read more ›
Which brings me to Marcello C, a relative infant among many watch makers, having only been founded in the 1990s. Marcello C takes a simple approach to making watches. Essentially, they use time-tested and approved classic designs with their own twist, apply high grade materials, and sell them at affordable prices. It is a Swiss watch maker with a German watch maker ethic, and it works. Part of being a newer watch maker is getting your name and product out there, and aggressive pricing is a big part of this. Even though Marcello C watches are priced well, their watches are slowly increasing in cost as they become more comfortable with the admiring fans they have been able to increasingly cultivate.Read more ›

I have never dived before in my life and until I layed eyes on the new Hydroscaph GMT Diver 1000m from Clerc, I never had a reason too. All of a sudden swimming with the sharks doesn't seem so scary anymore!Read more ›
So the site has officially started to unfold. I am getting help with everything. But here is a list of what I want to accomplish.
The basic elements of the Diavolo involve a Valjoux 7750 based chronograph watch. I am impressed that Marcello C was able to provide a chronograph movement, but that it does not "take over" the look of the watch. The chronograph functions are well integrated into the design to enhance the look. This is the difference between throwing in a chronograph complication, and actually designing a watch around it as Marcello C has done with the Diavolo.

You'll no doubt agree it is a sharp look, and here are some visual examples of other silver faced watches that also look nice with the white tie experience. In addition to the Marcello C. Nettuno 3, is also a Marcello C. Senatore with a silver face, a gent's Xemex Avenue with its modern and sophisticated approach, along with the highly traditional IWC Mark XV / Spitfire line of pilot inspired watches. Each I would argue is a perfect "marriage" with a formal tuxedo (typically has a white tie).
The Breitling Aerospace is one of Breitling's most successful watches. Why? Because it was relatively economical, masculine stylish, and housed Breitling's Super Quartz movement (thermoline Quartz which is about 20 times more accurate than a standard quartz movement). However, the last iteration of the Aerospace released was a while ago. Close to 10 years. Yes, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of mechanical movements, but there is still such a big market for them.Read more ›
Aside from the meticulously polished case and attractive face, the features in this Campanola are useful. This version focuses on the calendar providing the month, year, date, and date of the week. Further, the calendar is perpetual, meaning it takes into consideration leap years and the different amount of days months have. Lastly, the watch has synchronized 24 hour hand built into the the seconds subdial. Citizen is able to lay out this information in a way with lovely intrigue.
The Veldini Q takes this same approach with a smaller module that detaches from the watch itself (that other than telling time has no tools built in it). Ideally, the tools on the modules are going to be smooth operating and at least as hardy what Victorinox produces (which is high quality). The release mechanism on the watch is really cool and shaped like the hammer on a pistol. You pull back on the hammer with your thumb to eject the tool card; nifty. Here are the tools that you can get. Q Everyday: flat-head screwdriver, bottle opener, refillable slide-out pen, magnifying class, and serrated knife. Q Outdoor; flat-head screwdriver, file, flint stick (for starting fires), compass, and serrated knife. Q Spy; diamond tipped glass cutter, Philips head screwdriver, slide-out lock pick, magnifying glass, and straight edged knife. Pretty cool, but I would want them all.

The online watch store, Kenmar watches is now selling a full line of Botta Design watches which I discussed here. This is worth noting as Botta Design watches are among the best looking and Bauhaus minimalist watches around, and for an excellent price. Their designs earned them a Red Dot award, and I am happy to see them becoming more available.
When you consider what goes on inside of a watch movement, it is impressive that they even work at all. I mean really, have you ever considered the delicate dance of components harmonically beating and gyrating to the rhythm of the balance wheel which must maintain a strenuously high level of consistency? To think such sophistication was birthed so long ago, and yet only now serious improvement are being made.Read more ›

Breitling's new Avenger Seawolf Chronograph watch uses a new "non-contact" chronograph pusher system. Traditionally, depressing the chronograph pushers lowered a lever into the body of the watch. In the new for 2008 Avenger Seawolf Chronograph, pushing down the lever causes a magnet to approach another magnet inside the case without actually entering the case. In this instance the pusher never penetrates the watch case which remains sealed. This innovation allows for the watch case to remain completely sealed, and offer a "no-contact" chronograph operation experience. So for reference, the new magnet system allows for the Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chronograph to be fully functional at 1000 meters underwater.Read more ›
Ikepod is the watch brand behind industrial designer genius Marc Newson (from Australia). Ikepod watches each have a monocoque cases which means that the entire movement and dial are inside one unified piece of metal (for the most part). The look is a hip looking bulbous orb that looks like a "time" capsule on the wrist. While by no means inexpensive, you get a true "designer" look with Ikepod watches, which stress form and function.
Dial - Black with waves decor, applied hour-marker, numerals and hands coated with dark orange Superluminova, central display for minutes and off-centre for hours and seconds at 4 and 10 o’clock respectively, date window at 6 o’clock
